Daniel Park, MD, director of minimally invasive orthopedic spine surgery at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak (Mich.), has been using a new technique in his practice called biportal endoscopic spine surgery.
BESS, a recent addition to the minimally invasive spine space, can be used to treat a variety of spinal conditions, including herniated discs, lumbar spinal stenosis and lumbar interbody fusions.
Do You Really Need That Back Surgery?

Surgery is the only option for spinal stenosis patients who have lost control over their bowel or bladder, according to Dr. Daniel Park, a Michigan surgeon and spine editor of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons’ OrthoInfo website. The goal of such surgery is to free up the nerve so blood flow will improve and the nerve itself might return to some level of function, Park said.
